2015 Summer Institute for Disaster and Risk Research successfully held in Beijing Normal University

The 2015 Summer Institute for Disaster and Risk Research took place from July 27 to August 7 at Beijing Normal University (BNU). Prof. Ortwin Renn from University of Stuttgart, Germany, Prof. Carlo Jaeger, chairman of International Climate Forum and winner of the “Thousand Talents Plan” of BNU, Prof. Sander van der Leeuw and Prof. Marco Jasson from Arizona State University, USA, Researcher HAN Guoyi from the Stockholm Environment Institute, Prof. Li Ning, Vice Dean of Academy of Disaster Reduction and Emergency Management, attended the opening ceremony at Room 201 in the No. 2 teaching building of BNU on July 27th. On behalf of the university, LIU Lengxin, Deputy Director of the Office of International Exchange and Cooperation of BNU, CAI Wen, deputy director of Graduate School of BNU, delivered opening address respectively.

The two-week summer institute contained core lectures by world-leading scholars, individual sessions where participants can submit their own research, self-organized group works and individual mentoring. On August 7th, all the students graduated at Room 201 in the No. 2 teaching building.

The 2015 Summer Institute for Disaster and Risk Research is the 5th session of the series of Summer Institute for Disaster and Risk Research. It was suggested and prepared by the experts from the Programme of Introducing Talents of Disciplne to Universities, Hazard and Risk Science Base at BNU, and Future Earth Core Project—IRG Project. It was jointly organized by the State Key Laboratory of Earth Surface Processes and Resource Ecology of BNU, Academy of Disaster Reduction and Emergency Management Ministry of Civil Affairs & Ministry of Education, Key Laboratory of Environmental Change and Natural Disaster of Ministry of Education. The theme of the 2015 Summer Institute is “Disasters and Risks in the changing world”.

29 formal students and 12 passive students from 10 countries were engaged in the research seminar. The seminar course includes disaster risk science theory and progress, uncertainty of disaster risk, disaster risk assessment method, climate change and risk, green growth and sustainable development, etc. 8 famous domestic and foreign experts in the field of disaster risk science, including Prof. OrtwinRenn, Carlo Jaeger, Sander van der Leeuw, John Martin Anderies, Mickey Glantz, HAN Guoyi, SHI Peijun, and YE Qian, were invited to give lectures. Researcher HAN Guoyi hosted the seminar.

After two weeks of teaching, study and discussion, the students completed the course and learning tasks. A brief ceremony was carried out at the end of the seminar. Prof. Carlo Jaeger and Prof. SHI Peijun issued certificates of completion for students, and warmly congratulated them on their successful completion of the study. They expected that the students could establish long-term friendly relations, make persistent efforts, constantly improve their own level, and become the backbone in the field of disaster and risk research.
