UNISDR Science and Technology Conference on the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 was held in Geneva, Switzerland from January 27th to 29th, 2016. This conference’s goal was to discuss the role of science and technology in implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, and to launch partnership for the implementation. It was organized by the Scientific and Technical Advisory Group of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR). More than 700 participants around the world, including policy makers, practitioners and researchers, joined this meeting.
Prof. SHI Peijun gave a report on the theme of “Assessment and management of multi-harzard” on one of the group meeting of the conference. In this report, Prof. SHI Peijun made a comprehensive introduction of the fruitful work of Chinese scientists, especially those from Academy of Disaster Reduction and Emergency Management, in the assessment of multi-harzard, which largely helped governments’ disaster prevention and reduction work. His viewpoint on emphasizing the crucial role of science and technology in integrating social resources got extensive responses from the attendees. Prof. YE Qian, on behalf of IRG project, was invited to join the discussion on the role of international organization in dealing with disaster risks with the president of International Council for Science (ICSU), Chair of the science committee of IRDR, representative of United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs, and other conference participants.
During the conference, Prof. SHI Peijun also joined the working meeting of the Scientific and Technical Advisory Group of UNISDR, and discussed with Prof. Murray, vice chair of the group, on possible publication of core documents of this conference on International Journal of Disaster Risk Science. Besides, Prof. SHI Peijun had a short meeting with Dr. KAN Fengming, director of UNISDR Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, for the co-organization of working meeting of Asia-Pacific Disaster Risk Reduction Science and Technology Committee.
Besides, Prof. SHI Peijun and Prof. YE Qian were invited to discuss with Prof. Takara, director of Disaster Prevention Research Institute of Kyoto University, Prof. SHEN Wenwei and investigator WANG Dongming from the Hong Kong Polytechnic Univeristy, Mr. LI Guodong, president of Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Welfare Council Limited, Mr. HONG Jizheng, director of Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute, for their further cooperation, such as joint organization of international conference, submission of joint research proposal, etc., with Beijing Normal University, State Key Laboratory of Earth Surface Processes and Resource Ecology, Academy of Disaster Reducation and Emergency Management, IRG Project and 111 Project.
